8.6 PERT charts and critical path
-
A PERT chart is a project management tool used to schedule, organize, and coordinate tasks within a project.
-
PERT stands for Program Evaluation Review Technique, a methodology developed by the U.S. Navy in the 1950s to manage the Polaris submarine missile program.
-
PERT is a method of analyzing the tasks involved in completing a given project, especially the time needed to complete each task, and to identify the minimum time needed to complete the total project.
-
Critical path is the sequence of activities between a project’s start and finish that takes the longest time to complete.
-
Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM) help managers to plan the timing of projects involving sequential activities.
-
PERT/CPM charts identify the time required to complete the activities in a project, and the order of the steps.
